The Danube Cycle Track from Passau to Vienna

8 days / 7 nights

The Danube Bike Trail from Passau to Vienna is one of the most beautiful stages of this famous cycle route along the Danube from its source to its mouth in Donaueschingen into the Black Sea . Along the course through a variety of landscapes are many cultural attractions.
The journey begins in Passau, at the confluence from Ilz, Inn and Danube. From here you start the classic and easy cycling tour on well-maintained bicycle paths through nearly pitch-free terrain. You stay in selected ***-and ****-hotels. The return transfer from Vienna to Passau is included.


Itinerary

Day 1: Passau

Individual arrival in Passau. Handover of travel documents. The rental bikes (if booked) stand ready prepared in your arrival hotel. Individual sightseeing in Passau (historic center, cathedral St. Stephan, corner of 3 rivers, castle Veste Oberhaus). We recommend going on a 3-rivers-boat tour through Passau (runs daily, every 30 minutes, from 10 a.m. to 17 p.m.; approx. € 10,00 pp payable on the spot).

Parking possibilities: Parking space (unguarded, fenced property close to our info-point or arrival hotel) or public garage Güterbahnhof (close to station)

Day 2: Schlögen/Wesenufer (Cycling  40 km / 25 miles)

Passing Obernzell and Engelhartszell, you cycle along the river bank to Wesenufer or Schlögen.

Day 3: Linz (Cycling 56 km / 35 miles)

From the most famous part of the Danube, the “Schlögener Schlinge”, start a delightful day of cycling through an area of outstanding natural beauty to Aschach and further on to Linz. (Pöstlingberg, Lentos Artmuseum, Ars Electronica Center, Main square, Mariendom, beautiful oldtown).

Day 4: Wallsee/Au (Cycling 42 km / 39 miles)

Today, the Danube Cycle Path leads through the Machland region via the Abwinden power plant to Mauthausen, and past Wallsee Castle. Then on to the day's destination Wallsee/Au.

Day 5: Marbach/Maria Taferl (Cycling 56 km / 35 miles)

Through the Strudengau with the romantic Hößgang to Ybbs and to the day's destination, the second largest place of pilgrimage in Austria or Marbach.

Cat. B: Overnight at the 3***hotel Wachauerhof in Marbach or in Maria Taferl

Day 6: Krems (Cycling 51–66 km / 32–41 miles)

Cycle tour to Melk (famous abbey) and further on into the UNESCO world heritage region Wachau. There you pass the villages Spitz, Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein and reach Krems or Traismauer.

Shortcut possible by boat trip through the Wachau e.g. from Spitz (departure 11.40 a.m.) or Dürnstein (departure 12.30 p.m.) to Krems, arrival approx. 12.50 p.m. (changes of train schedule possible 2024)

Day 7: Vienna (Cycling 59–74 km / 35–45 miles)

You will reach Vienna via the flower city of Tulln. From Tulln possibly by suburban train (every half hour, approx. € 9.50 on site) to Vienna or continue by bike through the foothills of the Vienna Woods to Klosterneuburg (monastery) on the outskirts of Vienna, individually by subway to the hotel OR continue by bike past Klosterneuburg to the center of the Waltz City. The world metropolis offers a variety of sights (St. Stephen's Cathedral, Ringstrasse, Palace, Schönbrunn Zoo, Prater, Danube Tower, Belvedere Palace).

Day 8: End of cycle trip

 Additional nights or journey home. Transfer back to Passau for additional charge.
